Space Hackathon

In the past week, I participated in a technical hackathon for Interns. The task was to help create a system that keeps the mission control manager, space engineers and the moon base manager aware of changes occurring within a mission. These changes include rover location, equipment information, astronauts/engineer locations, etc.

My team focused on creating a Rover Information System, therefore, our task was to provide up-to-date information on all rovers in the mission.

We used a Miro board to discuss our ideas on what features to include in the system and how to implement the design. The most tasking part of this exercise was understanding the structure of the code and what exactly was expected of us. Thankfully, the organizers realised this and changed the goal of the hackathon. The goal was now to design the proposed system rather than implement it.

I encouraged my team to write down the features we each wanted the application to include on the miro board. I then gave an idea that we split into two teams, one team will help figure out how to implement these features and one team will come up with a design for the application that includes these features. They agreed.

I led the design team. We began by drawing low-level prototypes for the features in Miro. And we discussed how each feature should be presented to the personas (Tom, Neil and Gene) given.

Later on in the night, I began the design in Canva because I felt it would be easier to capture the look and feel I wanted. But I soon realized that Penpot was a better option so I moved the design over to Penpot.

Our design was inspired by NASA images, the NASA website, LinkedIn jobs search, Google material design kit and Gmail Inbox.

I realized that given the speculations given for the application, I could not design individual screens for the different personas, so it made sense to combine features where possible.

It was my first time designing an application in dark mode and I was very proud of what I was able to create. Below is a screenshot of the design. A click-through prototype can be accessed here.

Next Steps

I'm back to my LinkedIn learning course on designing in Figma and I'm learning a lot from it. I am also trying to create a design system for the podman desktop application.
