I received feedback from M on my designs of the registry page and the podman desktop styling guide. The feedback was beneficial, and I look forward to improving my mockups with them.
I completed my LinkedIn learning course on Figma with lessons on interactivity and sharing/collaborating/exporting designs with Figma. Finally, I conducted some user research for Podman Desktop via Reddit.
In my design of the registry page, I added text boxes for user input. I reduced the use of buttons by using links instead. I am attempting to create an animation in which when the user inputs a registry location, it is validated with a check mark. Also, a spinner will run as the text is being inputted.
I added an error message to display upon receiving invalid input.
I ran into some technical difficulties with prototyping the mockup, I hope I can resolve it quickly as it has nothing to do with the design itself.
Using Reddit, I conducted user research on potential and active podman users. I wanted to see what the community actually felt about using a Graphical User Interface for containerization. I learned the importance of doing this from one of my courses on LinkedIn. The tutor gave an example of a large entertainment conglomerate, I don't recall if it was Netflix or HBO. They thought that including a download feature was not necessary for a particular population.
However, user research revealed that a large percentage of the users in this market had very long commutes (90mins or more) with poor network connections, and that actually, being able to download movies was useful for them.
User research is important because it helps curtail our assumptions. For instance, during my research I found out that Docker Desktop is not actually the main competitor for Podman Desktop, meanwhile, I assumed they were the ones to beat. I learned that there are certain developers who believe GUIs are unnecessary and shouldn't be used at all. I also learned that developers experience usability issues with Docker Desktop.
Next Up
This week I am looking forward to presenting the registry page to the team. M and I are conducting user research interviews with podman users, I hope it is an eye-opening experience for us. I will also iterate on the style guide. I might also do some more learning via LinkedIn.
