In the past week, I updated the UI tasks for the Podman desktop application, I studied the Gamestorming book that M recommended to me. I updated the sketch for the help page. I had a brainstorming session with M for the next Podman desktop meeting. Finally, I began the LinkedIn course on Figma.
The podman desktop application has expanded a little bit, including support for troubleshooting within the application, editing configuration settings and a dedicated help page. I needed to add these changes to the list of user tasks.
I received an update from the team on my redesign of the help page. They would like to have a user flow for the troubleshooting aspect, mainly so that users can receive quick answers to their questions as opposed to going to the documentation page.
They also would like for the podman machine documentation to be less visible than the podman desktop documentation on the help page; they felt that while searching for help, some users might become confused.
The team would also like to include support for extensions, I think this aspect might become cumbersome. But I'll see how it goes.
Based on the team's feedback, I redesigned the help page to include a short troubleshooting guide at the top of the page, this way, users can get quick answers to the questions they have. My motivation for designing it this way as opposed to having the requested user flow is that as a developer when I encounter problems, I go to StackOverflow to find a quick and accurate way of solving my issue. My first instinct is not to go through a tutorial, this is the reasoning I have applied here. The page design is still a work in progress.
In the past week, I also had a brainstorming session with M, to discuss how to organize the next meeting with the Podman desktop team. The goal of the meeting is to gain a better understanding of who the users of the application are and how they interact with the application based on their needs/expertise in the area of container technologies.
My background for this brainstorming session were the LinkedIn course on Figma, the YouTube video by IDEO, and the gamestorming book M recommended to me.
We concluded this meeting by deciding to use personas and user journeys as a way of eliciting feedback from the podman desktop team. We believe that this will help achieve our goals.
Next Up
I joined the sprint meeting for the podman desktop team, they are expecting the preferences and help sections to be designed by the end of the coming week.
The meeting with the team is tomorrow so I need to spend some time studying and preparing for that. It's going to be a busy week! But hopefully a very productive one.
